Some people think that it is possible to win the World Cup using a $150 cue. Others doubt about making a proper key for four hundred bucks. There are also guys dreaming about piece of excusive wood for $800 that will certainly help in striking billiard balls inside the pocket, or those who believe that billiard professionals play with some kind of special cues for $2000 and more… All these words are the point at issue. Newcomers buy a $120-150 cue doing the right thing. Such inexpensive and simple cue allows them to neutralize uncertainty factor and concentrate on right striking accuracy contributing to better technique and performance accordingly.

The newcomer can also purchase a less expensive cue for $500, for example, as I did in the past. The same may happen also in the form of a gift when the giver orients oneself on the gift worth exceptionally. This is the way most reasonable people do.
1.    However, there are several hidden agendas you should know: having purchased an expensive cue the player starts thinking it will greatly affect the results and compensate lack of experience. No, only regular training together with good equipment will change the results.

2. It may also happen that the player tires of billiard and even stops playing. In this case an expensive $300 cue becomes another artifact in the storeroom. Rather hurtfully, isn’t it? It would be more hurtfully to spend $500-700 in such case.

3.  Some time you may get enlightened that the potential of a cue you’ve bought would never be unleashed in view of the fact that there is no possibility to spend в enough time playing billiard and training standard positions like any professional does. Or there is no sense in doing it – because not every beginner becomes a professional. This is common situation.

Here is the main message of the whole story: the more time player spends playing billiard, the more expensive cue he should have.

Theoretically the process should be as follows: a person is interested in billiard and starts giving more free time to it or, that is to say, visit billiard saloons, clubs and other premises equipped with billiard-tables. When the total time spent in a billiard room reaches a defined limit (40 hours, for example), the player starts willing not only spend his time playing billiard, but also strike cues more often in the pockets.

Having found that various factors affect the result, e.g. balls quality, billiard cloth, light, billiard table and, accordingly, a cue; this is when the player decides to purchase a personal cue, because the cue is used to manage balls directly striking them into the pockets.

Buying the first personal cue is an important step that helps to increase stability of billiard technique. If the self-fulfillment process will become more intense after purchasing a cue, then the money spent for it will be compensated by enjoying a good game. In case you cannot achieve better results in a short period of time, don’t blame your cue! Your professional cue shouldn’t become a sacrificial goat.
Of course you can invest a substantial sum of money in more expensive cue in view to gain the upper hand over your competitors, but it’s a slippery prospect. It would be more reasonable to spend this money for a good instructor able to help improving your technique. After it will be easier to evaluate the potential of a new cue, understand its particular qualities, reveal defects and after start choosing other option allowing to unlock player’s potential.

This is the time to remember about $300 cues because the cues inside this price spectrum vary greatly according to used technologies, solutions and geometry. And it is up to you what combinations of wood, balancing will the new cue have.

However, if your interest in billiard will be longstanding and fascinating, like professionals do, than you will need to improve the existing or buy a better billiard cue. Don’t force the events and do not save on your hobby obtaining maximum enjoyment!
So, what is our life? – The game!
